What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are custom-made restorations that cover the entire visible part of a tooth. They are used to restore the shape, size, strength, and appearance of a tooth that has been damaged or weakened by decay, wear, or breakage.

Reasons You Might Need a Dental Crown

  • To protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.
  • To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down.
  • To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't a lot of tooth left.
  • To hold a dental bridge in place.
  • To cover misshapened or severely discolored teeth.
  • To cover a dental implant.
  • To make a cosmetic modification for aesthetic purposes.

Types of Dental Crowns We Offer

Porcelain Crowns

These crowns are popular for their natural color match, making them an excellent choice for front teeth restoration. Porcelain crowns are highly aesthetic and blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Ceramic Crowns

Ceramic crowns provide a similar aesthetic to porcelain but are made from a different type of ceramic material. They are durable and biocompatible, with no risk of allergic reactions.

Gold Alloy Crowns

Gold alloy crowns are a mixture of gold, copper, and other metals, providing a strong bond to the tooth and not wearing down the tooth itself. They are well-suited for the restoration of back teeth due to their durability.

Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns (PFM)

PFM crowns offer a strong, durable, and aesthetic solution. They have a metal core covered with a layer of porcelain to provide a more natural appearance.

The Dental Crown Procedure at Model Dentistry

Initial Consultation

Your journey towards restored teeth begins with a consultation where Dr. Raborn examines your dental health and discusses the best crown options for your specific needs.

Preparation

The tooth is reshaped to ensure a proper fit for the crown. An impression of your tooth is then taken and sent to a dental lab where your crown is custom-made.

Temporary Crown

While your permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth.

Fitting Your Permanent Crown

Once your crown is ready, you'll return to our office for fitting. Dr. Raborn will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit and then cement the crown into place.
